Some random news

January 30, 2009 at 7:54 pm (fedora, kde) (, , )

The first one isn’t really random. KDE 4.2 was released on Tuesday Jan. 27th, 2009. This release has a LOT of new and interesting things for both users and developers. Anyway, I’m sure you have heard of that enough. For more information though, you can read the release announcement.

On another note, I have finally switched back to Fedora! well, I realized that although openSUSE is nice, but it’s still not me. Plus, I missed the livecd-tools and morally, Fedora sounded better! I mean, take SUSEstudio for example. It’s not free, and what Novell in doing with Microsoft is just not acceptable for me!

On another news, I am currently trying out GNOME, for a bit of fun. It’s not that bad, actually. In fact, it’s nice! I installed GNOME-Do and echo-icon-theme and it’s looking nice so far!

I have some random tips and tricks for Fedora which I will post soon, so keep in touch! =)

Apple and its iPhone patent

January 27, 2009 at 3:11 am (Uncategorized)

Ouch! This hurts. Apple has filed a patent on April 11 2008, which includes every aspect of the iPhone design. Apparently they have included everything, from speakers, to the user’s fingers (can that be patented too?). Anyhow, without further ado, Ladies and Gentlemen, I will present you the evil patent.

Hello Obama!

January 26, 2009 at 5:51 am (Uncategorized)

Hello Obama,

Although many people believe you can change the world, but let me share with you what I think. First of all, thanks to you, only 4 days after your inauguration, 22 people, and at least 16 innocent people have been killed on your order. Thanks, brilliant show off the first day! How can I ever think of you as a good person again? You crushed my hopes and the hopes of many other people who you tricked intelligently into believing that you will bring ‘change.’ Of course you did bring change, but I was hoping that the change would be more on the safe side. And it appears that your type of peace is different than mine, yours includes bombs, mine includes roses. All in all, I’m glad I got to know you sooner than later and I’m glad you didn’t let me support you more.

*sigh*
What are you American politicians trying to do? Take over the world? Then what? Take over heaven and hell? Then what? wanna fight with God? sounds like a good idea, yea? What? You guys think your weapons of mass destruction are the answer to everything? How about leveling everywhere with ground so people would print your name on CD covers?

uh, and why should anyone care what happens in another part of the world when the only thing people get in the American biased media? Just fix the economy and kill millions more, and you’re good to go for the next term. You seem to be yet another politician, and I won’t blame you for that!

Anyway,

Farewell Obama, and remember, there is always 2012 ahead.

How to get rid of your jumpy mouse

January 20, 2009 at 2:23 am (hardware)

Since I have gotten my desktop (one year ago), I have had a jumpy laser mouse. It kept jumping around the screen (very little, but still annoying). Today, however, I was looking around the web when I saw a forum where a person also had the same problem. And the answers he got varied from dying battery to dirty laser. After reading some more answers and other webpages regarding this problem, I doubted that maybe my problem is the same, and alas it was! For one year I have been suffering and didn’t realize the real problem.

After a few minutes, I took a pin and covered it with paper-towel and started cleaning the lens. I cleaned it very carefully for about a minute and came back to my computer and voila! The mouse works like a charm! =D

Before you ask me “Why the hell didn’t you another mouse,” I will tell you that I loved my mouse (Logitech MX3200), it fit my hand like nothing else and I didn’t want to give that up, so I just got used to the jumping.

Hope this helps someone else with the same problem

KDE 4.2 Screencasts

January 19, 2009 at 4:05 pm (kde) (, , )

There are already a few KDE 4.2 screencasts (two of which I proudly contributed, thanks to einar for mentoring Kourse 2). If you want to see KDE in action or you just want to see the future of of KDE (the future as in one week from now) then just head over to blip.tv and search for “kde42″ tag. There is a good chunk of things you can learn from them =)

my favorite openSUSE 11.2 features

January 19, 2009 at 3:54 pm (openSUSE) (, )

My enthusiasm for openSUSE has not stopped yet, and already, I have went through a lot of interesting and exciting proposed features of openSUSE 11.2. Here is a list of them:

Add web-browser for openSUSE installation
Port of YaST-Qt control center to Qt4
Official USB stick images
Installation into Windows partition
Look at Plymouth for boot

As you can see, “Installation into Windows partition” is already available in Ubuntu through Wubi, and some other distributions provide USB stick images and Fedora 10 has Plymouth, so why shouldn’t we have some of those? Isn’t free software about collaboration? =)

You can become an “Interested Person” by watching a feature (the watch button on the top right side) for b

And now openSUSE

January 19, 2009 at 3:37 am (Quick look, kde, linux)

I concluded that (K)Ubuntu does not match my taste. After tinkering with it a little, I noticed some strange behaviour (can’t remember them clearly) and plus, I didn’t like aptitude. I can’t really say much about (K)Ubuntu because I didn’t test it to death, but it wasn’t what I expected, or liked.

On the other hand, the fact that my computer was already on an OS war (on my behalf) and also the fact that I had an openSUSE 11.1 DVD handy, lead me to install openSUSE and try it. It’s been some time since I wanted to try openSUSE and enjoy this “KDE Distro,” as many users call it. And I have to admit, it is really a KDE distro. Unlike many other distros, openSUSE’s tools are centred around Qt/KDE API which gives it a unique and consistent KDE experience, and that’s precisely what I want.

Furthermore, Zypper is strong. Although I had some trouble updating to KDE 4.2 RC1 from 4.1.3 (it wouldn’t update some packages like kdebase-workspace), but I was able to fix it with the help of two kind guys (or girls, I don’t know, but most probably guys) on IRC freenode #opensuse-kde.

All in all, I’m enjoying the experience, and I have openSUSE on my Desktop now and I have no problem with it. Also, I like that openSUSE has implemented a feature tracker much like Fedora’s, and they called it openFATE, I already see some features which I would really like to see implemented like using Qt4 for YaST instead of Qt3. and to conclude this post, I will admit, I like openSUSE, the KDE experience is nothing short of “right.”

A talk with Ubuntu

January 14, 2009 at 8:31 pm (kde, linux) (, , )

Briefly, I’m installing kde-nightly on Ubuntu, and it’s on 17% right now, so I will stay up until it’s finished and then go for my noon nap before I start doing homework for school. And as it appears, I will be talking about Ubuntu for the next few days before I touch on openSUSE. I’m a KDE fan, I just have to give all these fantastic distros a try before settling on the one that suits me best.

From the look of it, each of the big distros (openSUSE, Fedora, and Ubuntu) have advantages that the other one doesn’t. For example Fedora has the cutting edge techno, while openSUSE plays nice with KDE with its unstable, factory, and stable repos. However, Ubuntu is nothing short of the other ones, it has a daily build of most KDE modules which is, for many KDE fans out there (including me), a big plus.

All in all, I’m giving them all a try to see how it goes, though I understand that openSUSE has weekly snapshots of trunk in their UNSTABLE repo (am I right?).

Anyway, I’ll get back to work. More info on (K)Ubuntu to come later and I will definitely do a review of it in the not-so-near future (I want to give it a fair try). And I won’t forget, I set up kde-nightly following this tutorial.

How are you Dr. Dvorak?

January 5, 2009 at 1:54 am (Uncategorized)

As the title of the post says, it has something to do with the Dvorak keyboard layout. And as a matter of fact, I’m typing this post using the Dvorak layout. And I should say that this is a tough layout. Anyway, I will now explain how to change the layout in KDE 4.2. If you take a look at the previous post, I explained How to change the layout for different languages. It’s the same process but with a slightly different ending. So I will explain How to do it in KDE, because I haven’t yet figured out how to do it in GNOME. So, in KDE you need to go to SystemSettings > Regional > Keyboard Layout and after you enable it, choose your Layout, and then click on the keyboard variants. Under the keyboard variants click on the combobox and select your variant which in thos case is the Dvorak variant. If you can’t find it there, you can then choose the USA layout which gives you the Dvorak layout. Wow, I can’t believe that I Typet this much using this Dvorak layout and I should say that I’m getting better at it!!! It’s so much fun!

By the way, if you want a good tutorial on how to start typing in Dvorak, you can use this tutorial:
